When laying heavy underground cables, controlled cable movement is essential. For Kepser, DM Wheel Systems developed a complete wheel solution for cable transporters used in the field, including projects for Heijmans. Within this system, our wheels provide both the drive and the guidance for the cable.
The challenge
The application requires a wheel solution that performs reliably under demanding conditions. Especially regarding the drive, sufficient grip is necessary to transport the cable in a controlled manner. At the same time, the cable must not be damaged during transport. Because the machines are used outdoors, sustainability, wear resistance, and consistent performance play an important role. Additionally, there was a need for more oversight at the process level. The various parts of the wheel were previously purchased through multiple suppliers, which led to longer lead times, more coordination, and multiple points of contact.
The solution
DM Wheel Systems translated this requirement into a complete custom wheel solution. Instead of sourcing individual components through multiple parties, we supply the complete wheel including core, rubber coating, axle, and assembly. The rubber coating provides the extra grip needed to drive the cable reliably and in a controlled manner. At the same time, this coating helps to move the cable carefully without unnecessary damage. A key advantage of this approach is that the full responsibility lies with a single supplier. DM Wheel Systems not only handles the production of the wheels but also manufactures the axles. As a result, Kepser has one single point of contact for the complete system, making the delivery process clearer and more efficient. Together with Kepser, various wheel variants were developed for both drive and guidance. This resulted in a solution where grip, stability, durability, and reliable running come together within one system.
The result
With the complete wheel solution from DM Wheel Systems, Kepser now has one central point of contact for the entire wheel system. This makes the process more manageable, shortens communication lines, and limits dependency on multiple suppliers. Because DM Wheel Systems produces both the wheels and the axles and bears full responsibility, the lead time for the total order was reduced by 8 weeks compared to previous deliveries elsewhere. The various wheel variants technically align with their function within the machine. This creates a reliably operating system for controlled cable transport, with stable guidance, sufficient grip, and a more efficient delivery process.
