Which is better: a tread made of recycled or vulcanised rubber?

< Back to the overview

In the Netherlands, wheels with a tread made of recycled rubber are the most commonly sold variety. However, despite their popularity, this is not the best option. Recycled rubber, usually fitted in a loose tire around the wheel, lacks the excellent properties of natural rubber, most importantly elasticity. Vulcanised rubber on the other hand, has excellent elasticity. The rubber is pressed in from the front while driving and is pushed back on the other side. As a result, the wheel receives a continuous stream of force in the direction of travel, which promotes ease of use.
